Olay is a well-established and successful company that began in South Africa and has now expanded worldwide. It has come a long way from its days as a single, unique pink fluid product to the many product lines and varieties found in stores today. Olay is particularly known for its anti-aging product line Olay Total Effects, which saw the revolution of moisturizers to a more boutique-style of product. Getting an Olay Skin Care product

When the company was first established in 1949, Oil of Olay was a South African beauty product firm started by a former Unilever chemist. Olay products stood out from competitors because instead of selling a cream, Olay sold a pink fluid in a glass bottle that became iconic. Even the marketing of Olay products separated the company from its closest competitors. The pink fluid was never explicitly sold as a moisturizer or a beauty item, but as a “secret” to beauty and younger looking skin. Marketing also decided to change the name of the product depending on the country to make it more appealing to a variety of languages until 1999 when they decided to unify the brand name.

 Today, the Olay brand has dropped the “Oil of” part of its name; it is a worldwide brand with several ranges of creams, cleansers and other skin products. Olay attempted to launch a line of cosmetics in 1996 but soon after the company discontinued these products. Olay currently has a line of boutique items that focus on the expanding trend in the market for anti-aging products and designer creams for less. In fact, Olay is credited with creating the category of “anti-aging” products that are now readily available and produced by many beauty products companies.

 In 1999, Total Effects, Olay’s first product in the category, launched and was sold at a price point significantly higher than most commercial moisturizers. The gamble worked and now there are many anti-aging moisturizers on the market that are even more expensive. Olay’s new slogan has been updated as well, from “Share the secret of a younger-looking you” to “Love the skin you’re in”. The brand has expanded to include moisturizers, cleansers, soaps and lotions for all skin types and even sun screen for another level of skin protection.

 The two main anti-aging lines are Olay Total Effects and Olay Regenerist, which are the most popular. However, there are skin care lines from Olay that cover all types of skin and all ages.
